When deployed with a hand-held fire extinguisher sized appropriately for the risk, the AVD mist delivers a controlled, highly effective response to lithium battery incidents.
Upon application, vermiculite particles suspended within the AVD mist settle rapidly onto the surface of the burning battery or fuel source. These particles form a thin film that dries almost instantly.
As the vermiculite platelets overlap and bond together, they create a robust oxygen-excluding barrier between the fire and the surrounding atmosphere. This barrier plays a critical role in suppressing combustion while also shielding adjacent cells or components from escalating heat transfer.
At the same time, the water content within the AVD formulation delivers a cooling effect, reducing battery temperatures and slowing the progression of thermal runaway. As evaporation occurs, additional vermiculite accumulates, further stabilising the incident and bringing the fire under control.
