Vermiculite particles within the mist settle on the surface of the burning fuel to create a film on top of the fire. The film dries instantly, and because the platelet particles overlap and bond, an oxygen barrier is created between the fire and the atmosphere.
This process has a cooling effect on the fuel source and as the water content in AVD evaporates, vermiculite platelets begin to accumulate and the fire is controlled.
